Here is a brief explanation of how showing dogs works. Pictures will follow.
Dogs (males) and bitches (females) are judged seperately in the classes.
There are several classes in which you can enter your dog or bitch: Welcome to the dog show!
Each AKC breed has a written standard in which the judge will compare, or judge each dog against.
Included are conformation, movement, structure and temperament.
Winner's Dog and Bitch then go back in the ring with the entered Champions for the Best Of Breed
competition. The judge makes 3 placements in this class:
Now on to the pictures with explanations of what's going on... Niki was entered in the Bred By Exhibitor class.
Each dog/bitch must stand for the judges 'hands on' examination. Seen here is the judge checking Niki's bite and tongue. Shar-Pei must have a 'scissors' bite and a blue/black tongue.
Good movement and balance are essential. The judge will ask you to move your dog around the ring so they can see front, rear and side movement. Shar-Pei should be gaited in a fast trot.
The judge examines each dog or bitch in the class.
After each dog or bitch has had it's individual examination, the judge will ask all dogs to go around the ring to compare movement between the dogs. Then they all line up for the 'final inspection'. How well your dog looks right now can sometimes make it or break it for you. You want to make sure your dog is stacked up perfectly. The judge may or may not change the order of the dogs. The dogs are once again sent around the ring together where the judge will point to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place class winners.
As mentioned above, the class winners compete for Winner's Dog and Winner's Bitch. Sorry, I don't have a picture of Niki competeing for Winner's Bitch. Yes, that does mean she got 1st in her class.
Shown here is the Best Of Breed competition. Yep, that's Niki on the end; she won Winner's Bitch. Here is where Best Of Breed, Best Of Winner's and Best Of Opposite Sex are selected.
Well, she did it. Niki took Best of Winners and Best Of Opposite. It's was a great day!
"I did good, didn't I mommy?" "You sure did, Niki-baby, you sure did."
We hope you enjoyed the show!
We want to thank our very dear friends, Jody and Bill Lewis, for these wonderful pictures. What a nice surprise it was getting them in the mail.
