Now there's two.... Our "Jeep" was named after Eugene the Jeep from the old Popeye comics. We thought they both had cute pink noses. See Jeep history at the bottom of this page. Thanks to our friend Tristin and her mom, Mariel, for turning us on to 'Jeep'. Update- Jeep obtained in Canadian Championship on July 28, 2001. He earned this title in a total of 5 shows in 8 days. Jeep also earned his CGC (AKC's Canine Good Citizen)on April 27, 2002. Jeep is currently training in Agility.
Update - August 10, 2003 - Jeep has earned his first 2 agility titles in CPE. This also gives him the CSCPA's Versatile Shar-Pei "VSP" title.
Update: 3/02 - Jeep is currently in training for Agility competition. Check it out.
Jeep HistoryEugene The Jeep is a character out of the comic strip Popeye, created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Olive received the small yellow animal from her Uncle Ben on March 3, 1936. Eugene was a small, impish, 4 dimensional character that lived in a 3 dimensional world. As such, he was not constrained to the world we know - he could do wonderous things like walk through walls, walk on ceilings, appear out of nowhere. In short, he could go pretty much anywhere he wanted. Eugene the Jeep (C) first appeared in Popeye on August 9, 1936 - about 4 years before the US Army started testing its new 1/4 ton utility vehicle - which would eventually be called the Jeep. No one really knows WHY this new vehicle was called a Jeep but one theory has it that Popeye was an extremely popular comic strip at the time and that the soldiers were so impressed with the new vehicle's go anywhere, do anything capabilities, that they were reminded of Eugene's character and so dubbed the new vehicle a Jeep. Eugene the Jeep doesn't live with Popeye; he's usually busy ruling Jeep Island. But because of his ability to foretell the future, the little animal always appears when Popeye or Swee'pea needs his special talents.
